We had a comfortable night in the RV, and walked up to the rental office about 8:10. We watched a video that explained the RV’s systems well enough so that anyone could do it! Great Alaskan Holidays runs a clean, classy operation, all the RV’s are less than two years old, and they have over 100 units in the rental fleet! We were on the road about 9:30. First stop: Wal-Mart. Then Sam’s Club, right across the street. A few more miles into town for a shopping spree at REI. Then, on the way out of town, we realized that we had forgotten mayo (who can live without mayo?), so we stopped at a convenience store. Then a stop at the Safeway in Soldotna for booze and something else. 4 grocery stores in 4 hours!

We had some sprinkles of rain on the way to Soldotna, and stopped at the Kenai River and a few other places for pictures. This was Mom’s first time here, so we couldn’t miss the photo ops. Arrived at Eric’s about 5 and went to dinner at Mykel's, where the fish and chips were excellent. I made raspberry martinis when we got home, and we all turned in.
Our RV was a 29-foot Winnebago Class C, with no slide-outs. It was the biggest thing that I had ever driven, and it took a little getting used to in city traffic. I changed lanes very carefully until I got a good feel for where the rear end REALLY was. It ran fine, but could have used stiffer springs…it wallowed all over the place. Our 8-day rental cost about $1,800, which is probably less than we would have paid for two hotel rooms per night for the same period. It got about 8 MPG. We really enjoyed the RV, and would do it again.
