September 12 and 13
Funny, nobody was ripping and raring to go this morning.
When we finally got up and around, we went to breakfast at a coffee house not far up the road called Flapjacks. The specialized in huge pancakes with special toppings. I got one with raspberry jam that was wonderful!
The rest of the day was spent sitting around, chatting, reliving memories of college. Rob showed us around the area a bit, and I kept an eye on the weather. A low pressure system was sitting on top of us, bringing rain. It was first forcast to move to the East and be out to sea quickly, but now it was stalling. Our plans were to ride north, up the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario, cross back into the US at Ten Thousand Islands, and head due east across New York, heading for Bar Harbor, Maine. The ride through New York would take us through the Adirondack mountains, and we wanted dry pavement when we got there. This low was messing up my plans.
Rob tried out the bikes.
As we discussed it, Rob said that we were more than welcome to spend another night at his place. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Spending another day here would make it almost impossible to make Maine, but waiting for drier conditions would make any riding we did get to do more enjoyable. So we decided to stay.
Rob's parents came over that night for a drink. I had not seen them since we graduated in 1988, the hadn't changed a bit. We had moose steaks for dinner. Don't get that much in Florida!
On the 13th, Rob took us down to the marina where he keeps his boat in the summer. He already had it out of the water for the season, shrink-wrapped on the trailer beside the house.
Note that the skies are still gray. It rained on and off all day. Staying put had been a good decision.
This was at a gas station in front of the marina. I had never seen a bait machine before. |
During the day we found a shoe repair shop, where Eric had his chaps repaired and reinforced, and his boots resoled.
We discussed what to do for dinner. How about home-made pizza? And beer?
Eric, being the Italian, seemed like the obvious person to be the pizza chef. Rob assisted, I took pictures and tended bar.

Rob's cousin Gary came over to help us with the pizzas, and we watched "Goldmember" on DVD. About 9:30, Rob put in "Gladiator" I had forgotten how long a movie it was. It was 1:09AM when I crawled into bed. The alarm was set for 6.
