June 29
We slept in, then went for a walk. We were trying to stay on the waterfront, but ended up in a construction area, so had to do some backtracking. Back at the hotel, I hit the gym for an hour, and we hit the hop-on-hop-off trolley around the city. A great deal at $33 for two days of unlimited use, plus a one way pass on the cute little False Creek Ferry. We jumped off at Granville Island, which is a collection of cool shops and galleries, and has a huge farmers market with every kind of produce, meat, fish, and other foods imaginable.

There was an exhibition of brightly painted bears around town.

We saw a lot of Vancouver for the first time,
including the first seedy part we had seen, on the edges of Chinatown, where we
saw a lot of bums and at least one girl shooting up on the sidewalk. We were
back at the room by 5:30, then went to a 6:15 reservation at
Cardero's.
We had made the reservation the day before, and found that they stayed booked several
days ahead of time between 6 and 9, so we were happy to get the table. The food
was excellent, served by a funny and personable waiter named Peter. We love Vancouver. It has beautiful architecture, stunning natural beauty, and a mix of cultures that makes for interesting people-watching and outstanding food. It is our favorite city. |
